Michigan continues to drive the Arsenal of Innovation forward, brought into sharper focus by a newly announced office with the same powerful international presence.

Office of Defense and Aerospace Innovation (ODAI)

Long known for its leadership in ground vehicle technology, today’s Michigan mobility knows no bounds. With more advances in ground tech, coupled with strides on the aerial front, the time was right to evolve the Michigan Defense Center into the ODAI. Helmed by Executive Director Col. John Gutierrez, USMC (Ret.), the office is dedicated to bolstering the state’s defense and aerospace sectors.

Saab Inc.

One of the ODAI’s first major announcements was securing Saab Inc.’s investment in Grayling, Michigan. Michigan successfully outcompeted six other states—despite having no prior Saab presence by orchestrating site visits that showcased Camp Grayling’s military training and product testing capabilities.

The first phase of Saab’s investment will create nearly 70 jobs within a geographically disadvantaged area, with an average wage more than double the regional median. Future expansion could further strengthen Michigan’s defense industry and attract additional suppliers.

Defense Events

Michigan actively engages in global defense industry events to secure partnerships, attract investments, and showcase its capabilities.

The Association of the United States Army’s (AUSA) annual meeting in Washington, D.C., is the largest land power exposition and professional development forum in North America. Over three days, the MEDF helped Michigan connect state officials with over 700 exhibitors and key defense and security leaders that can help drive the state’s industry forward.

Also, with the backing of the MEDF, Michigan joined over 330 delegations and 2,000 exhibitors at Eurostatory in Paris to advance collaborations in autonomous systems, cybersecurity, AI, and climate-resilient solutions.

In San Diego, the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International’s (AUVSI) Xponential 2024 continued its legacy as the premier technology event for autonomy, drones, and robotics. This year’s AUVSI gathering of global leaders gave Michigan, with MEDF’s support, access to 7,500 industry leaders and endusers making groundbreaking tech, engaging in education sessions, and participating in specialized defense programming.
