THE NEXT GENERATION OF MID-MICHIGAN MANUFACTURING
Michigan invented modern manufacturing when the first car rolled off the assembly line. A century later, we’re still transforming how things around the world are made.
Dow Upgrades Its Michigan Presence
In a landmark commitment, the Dow Chemical Company announced a $785 million modernization project for its Michigan Operations Industrial Park. The upgrades will reinforce the Great Lakes Bay region as a hub for advanced manufacturing and sustainable technology development. Michigan’s strategic focus on advanced manufacturing, electric vehicles, and clean energy aligns well with Dow’s business strategy and operations.
Mid-Michigan’s Global Footprint Grows
Global leader Corning Inc. is making its first direct entry into Michigan a staggering one. The company will construct a massive, state-of-the-art solar components facility in Richland Township, Saginaw County, with an investment of $900 million.
Consumers Energy played a vital role in ensuring Corning will have the energy availability and competitive pricing needed. The utilities’ shared efforts with the MEDC brought home a Deal of the Year Impact Award from Business Facilities for clean energy manufacturing.
Beyond enormous community benefits, this project will strengthen Michigan’s leadership in clean energy, aligning with the state’s ambitious climate goals while reducing the country’s reliance on imports. This new solar ecosystem builds on the nearby Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC), in which Corning has an ownership stake, as one of only five in the world that produces polysilicon, a key ingredient in both semiconductors and solar panels.
On the heels of the Corning investments, HSC is set to become an even stronger anchor for semiconductor and technology excellence in the U.S. with a proposed $325 million federal CHIPS and Science Act investment. This is the largest such investment in the state so far, and made possible in part by $40 million from the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund for a new manufacturing facility.
